Mathilde Palanque - Poland

Hello, my name is Mathilde Palanque, and I am 16 years old. I am currently in my last year of

high school in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. I have been living here for almost 3 years and even

though coming here was a bit difficult at the beginning, now, I can say that I love this place and moving

here was a great decision. Warsaw is a great and very interesting city; it’s still a capital but not too big

so you can do everything by foot or by tramway. There are lot of museums and places to see and to

visit, especially linked with history. Indeed, as you may know, Poland has a heavy history with

the Second World War because it was the first country to be officially attacked by the Germans, but

even more because of the concentration and extermination camps that were located in the south of the

country. Then, Poland was taken by the communists and you can still feel and see this heritage. For

example, with the architecture of the streets or the monuments. The most famous and the must-see

if you come here is the Palace of Culture, the highest tower of the city, built in the communist era.

To speak a bit about my life, as I said, I love living here. My school is not too big; there are only

two classes of my level, so everyone knows each other and there is a really familiar vibe. I met my

friends on the very first day of school and we have been best friends ever since. My weeks are very full

because of school so, on the weekend, I take time to rest, to read, and to do some sport. I like running

so I try as much as possible to run either in the park next to my home or along the Vistula river. Also,

I see my friends, usually on Saturdays. We go out and spend some good time together. But I have a lot

of work for school, so I also have to take time to do it.

To be very honest, the weather in Poland is not very friendly, especially in winter where we usually

have snow and negative temperatures. But it has its charm, especially during Christmas time, you can

drink some hot chocolates while walking in the Old city or at the Łazienki Park. These are two beautiful

places that I love to go to. Last year, we had some snow during almost 3 months straight, so we did a

lot of snowball fights with my friends. It’s a great memory and we had so much fun!
