Fiona Schmitz - Germany

Germany has a lot of great places that you need to visit one day. For me personally, a must have is the north. It doesn’t matter if you want to visit the North Sea or the Baltic Sea, both are different from each other but great.

For example, a good island to visit is Rügen. Rügen is the biggest island of Germany and is in the Baltic Sea. It is in the federal state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is a UNESCO world heritage site. The “Kreidefelsen” are impressive to see as much as the national park “Jasmund.” There is much more than just that on the island; you can investigate different cities, which are all located there. Before you can get on the island, you need to cross the “Rügendamm” or “Rügenbrücke” since it is an island.

On the North Sea, you can visit “Ostfriesland," which is in the federal state Niedersachsen. There, you can visit the islands Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog or Spiekeroog, but there are also more cities or small villages that you can visit. Interesting is that you can see sheep almost everywhere. That is a huge difference from the Baltic Sea because there you don’t see sheep running free on highways. You can explore their nature and more.

Not everyone likes the sea, so some would probably visit the south of Germany: Munich, for example, in the federal state Bayern. The south is very different from the north if you look at nature. In the south, there are big mountains where you can go skiing in the wintertime or hiking in the summer. The north has some mountains, but they are not as big as the ones in the south. If you want to hike a lot and explore nature, then you need to decide where you would want to go. All these places are amazing, and you should see them if you are coming to Germany.

Germany has more than just places where you can enjoy nature: the capital city Berlin, for example. Not only does Berlin have an interesting history, but you can also see quite a lot when you are there just by walking. Some great things to see are the Brandenburger Tor, Fernsehturm, Humboldt Forum, or the Olympiastadtion. In Berlin, there is the main building of the German government and you can see the chancellor’s seat as well. Berlin had the “Berliner Mauer” (Berlin Wall), built in 1961, which ultimately fell when divided Germany was put back together. Still, you can see small pieces of the old wall standing at certain places in Berlin. Before the fall, many were not allowed to visit the other part of Germany or Berlin, so the wall’s fall was and is still important for Germans. For that reason, the third of October, when Germany was reunited, is a national holiday.

There is so much that you could visit when you are in Germany that I cannot name everything. It also depends on what you want to see while you are there. If you are interested in history, Berlin is a great choice. If you want to see the sea and enjoy nature, going north with a bike would be great for you. If you want to go hiking, the tall mountains of the south, along with Munich, would be perfect.

As you can see, Germany has so much to explore and it depends on what you would like to see and experience. There are many great places with a lot of history and old buildings, like the “Schloss Neuschwanstein.” Before you visit, you should know when you want to do so. In the summer, it is pretty warm mostly everywhere, while in the winter, you have snow in the south and sometimes even in the north. The autumn is rainy but still amazing and, in the spring, it is mild to warm temperatures with some rain.

These 3 pictures are from Berlin, which I took while I was there.

This picture is from a hike I did 2 years ago.

These pictures are from the North and the Baltic sea, as I describe in my text above.
